A Family weekend in the Cape…

Hello friends!! We are still in the midst of a loooong weekend here in South Africa, and in a somewhat lazy holiday mode….. I have spent the last 5 days “sightseeing” in my backyard, and want to share it with you all.

We have a distant cousin visiting us at the moment from the USA. My hubby’s family history is really interesting. His great grandmother was one of 3 Cummings sisters who came out to South Africa in the 1870′s from Mount Holyoake University in America, to establish a school for girls in Wellington, South Africa. Of the three sisters, his great-grandmother was the only one to marry and his mother Mary Elizabeth (named after her grandmother) is really passionate about the family history and keeps it alive for us. The three sisters left behind their family (including 2 brothers), and over the decades contact has been maintained with the other “branches” of the family in the USA. Amanda Cummings has been visiting us this week – she is the youngest of the grandchildren of Dick Cummings who is the same generation as my mother-in-law. It is really special to maintain this contact and share the family history, and we have really loved having Amanda to stay!!

On Wednesday last week we went out to Wellington, where my mother-in-law shared all the history with Amanda and showed her all the buildings and memorabilia in the museum. It was really interesting and enjoyable!

We have spent the rest of the time showing Amand around the Cape Peninsula – from Hermanus on the South Coast to Cape Point and the city of Cape Town. Unfortunately the weather has not played ball for a trip up Table Mountain, but she still has a few days so will hopefully get there too. And of course we have eaten well and tasted a lot of wine!! Here are some pictures of the family and our sightseeing…

I hope those of you in South Africa are enjoying what’s left of the weekend. I’ll see you again tomorrow!!
