Hello friends!! We’re back and I have so much to tell you!!
Firstly – we had a lovely trip. Los Angeles was so much nicer than I had anticipated (possibly due to the fact that we stayed in Santa Monica which is a lovely area). We pretty much did and saw everything that we wanted to: Venice Beach, Malibu, The Getty Centre, Hollywood Walk of Fame (the least pleasant as it is a total tourist trap), we drove Sunset Boulevard and Mulholland Drive, saw the iconic sign on the hill, Beverly Hills and all the famous hotels…….. there was so much!! Our usual streets were Wilshire Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard (it felt a bit like “Pretty Woman”….). Most importantly we got my step-daughter settled in to CALARTS, and came home feeling really great about her choice of university, the school itself, the campus, her “dorm” – and her new friends of whom we met quite a few. This is a real relief to me, as I was worried that my hubby would be really stressed when we left, but it all just felt so right (and thank goodness for Wi-Fi and FaceTime chatting!!). The worst part of the trip? The travel time – and the fact that our return journey was lengthened by 24hrs due to a passport glitch in Amsterdam. We left LA on Thursday at midday and got home on Sunday at midday……….!!!
Yes – of course we did some shopping too!! I broke all my records and left SA with 4,5kgs of clothes. I figured with hand-luggage I had about 20kgs of shopping allowed!! And I maxed it out!! I had a list of shops that I wanted to see and I did. Niel was so patient and let me drag him everywhere – but I found some “alternate” shopping for him at each spot which made it easier. Let me just say that the stationery shopping in the States is AMAZING!! Every brand that I drool over on the internet was right there in the shops, and I really had to hold myself back. All my Christmas shopping is pretty much done. My “favourite” brand is Rifle Paper Co - for calendars, stickers, notecards – and a phone cover too!!
I can’t possibly show you everything in 1 blog post, so I’ll be sharing with you over the next week or so.
The first Papersource store I spotted was in Beverly Hills (I didn’t even get as far as Rodeo drive (the next street) for a look…….). OMG. I was quite overwhelmed and didn’t know where to start! The selection was beautiful, and the trends are so exciting. Owls, hedgehogs and foxes are big, as are botanicals.
The range of handmade paper from Italy, Japan, India and Nepal was too beautiful, and I got some pieces. I’m still thinking what I will make with it.
I also got a selection of lovely coloured envelopes – white just gets boring eventually!! Other loot included wrapping paper, notebooks, envelope templates and magnets. Surprisingly there was not (here or at other stores) too much washi tape, but I got about 3 rolls of “ikat” type designs. The shop assistant was so friendly and helpful, and was happy for me to take as many pictures in the shop as I wanted.
I walked out of there with 2 bags and feeling so excited and inspired!
Next time I’ll tell you about my visit to …….. Anthropologie!!
It’s great to be back – I missed you all!! (PS: my shop is open again and I’ll be updating some new washi tape soon!!)
