i love urbanic paper boutique

Hello!! I hope all of my South African readers had a lovely Heritage Day yesterday – and of course a lekker braai!! Thankfully we are enjoying some gorgeous sunshine in the Cape (for a change) and so it was a lovely day yesterday!!

I still have some wonderful things to share with you from our recent trip to Los Angeles! (Who knew it would take me THIS long to share everything with you all!!). Today is all about Urbanic Paper Boutique in Venice Beach. I have been following Parcel Post (Urbanic’s blog) for a long while now, and I also follow Audrey Woollen (the owner of Urbanic) on Instagram. Both of these are a constant source of inspiration for me.

What a stunning shop!!! Audrey has put together a stylish array of all the most beautiful stationery brands. A theme running through the shop was “travel” with travel inspired calendars, art, journals and other what-nots. Also – a party theme with beautiful paper cups, wooden cutlery and number “sparklers”.

Brands that stood out for me were Rifle Paper Co (again!), Moglea and Smock (wrapping paper and gorgeous boxes) – just to name a few.

Something that I found so impressive was the way in which the shop was styled – each area had a “story” and there was no clutter. Even the washi tape was scattered around the shop, fitting in with each theme, and not just piled in a basket or bowl to rummage through. Different brands were all mixed up through the shop, with the end result being so coherent and conducive to an enjoyable shopping experience. This is very much like Parcel Post where Audrey’s posts generally revolve around a “theme”. Such a lovely way of styling your shop!!

Did I buy anything – of course!!!!! And my man waited patiently in the car, and never rolled his eyes when I eventually got into the car carrying 2 bags. Gotta love him!!!

My only disappointment – Audrey was not in the day I was there!! I would have loved to have met her. Maybe one day I will have to pop in again and say hi!!

oh anthropologie…..!!

I’ve got so much to share I’m back again!!! Hello all!

So – Anthropologie! Think our South African store “Poetry” – and then take it to another level completely. I have read so much about Anthropologie, and trawled their website so often – this was an absolute MUST on my list of places to see. I was not disappointed. I visited the store at the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, and the store at The Grove in LA itself. Both stores were beautiful – similar but different. I think one of the dream jobs to add to my “list” is the merchandiser/store display person in an Anthropologie store.

Anthropologie 6

Obviously the seasons are changing in the north and they are moving in Fall – the shops were full of jewel colours, somewhat subdued lighting, with a woodland (hand made faux mushrooms that blew me away!!) theme running throughout. The shop floors are either concrete or wood, and the walls rough concrete, with various finishes (paint, wallpaper, artwork). Exposed industrial ceilings are the perfect addition. The homeware displays use large wooden furniture pieces, with displays looking almost like they would in a home. The quilts and textiles (obviously sourced from all over the globe) were stunning, and such luxurious towels in the most scrumptious colours – mustards, teals, navy. The blue/white floral wall was so eye-catching.

And the ceramics – bowls, measuring cups that I would use as beautiful display items, ceramic rolling pins, jugs, monogrammed mugs….. enough to completely overwhelm you if you had to choose just one. (Un)fortunately I didn’t buy anything breakable – but I don’t think I would have been able to choose in any case. I did get a few dishcloths, yummy soaps, a calendar, monogrammed notecards and notebooks (yes – stationery again!!).

I will admit to not spending too much time looking at the clothes – but they were absolutely beautiful, and so refreshing to see items that have a more unique feel about them, not really conforming to “commercial” trends, and yet still on trend in a luxurious kind of way. One of the reasons for this was that the clothes, while gorgeous and absolutely worth their prices, were very expensive (in rand terms). The cheapest items I could find were about R800 plus. (There was this one dove grey leather handbag that had my name on it – but I walked away…..)

And the “cherry on top” for me was the “shopping” experience itself - shopping baskets are those deep woven baskets that hang over your shoulder, your purchases are wrapped in soft brownish tissue paper (think the old sewing-pattern paper), and the shopping bags are thick, plain cream paper bags with cream ribbon (with a thin red thread) handles. In small type near the top of the bag it simply states ANTHROPOLOGIE. Stunning!!!

So all I can say is if you ever walk past an Anthropologie store in the US, or in Europe (yes – they have quite a few dotted around there too!!) – stop, turn, go in!!!! Do not hesitate!!

I’ll be back next week with more to share. Have a lovely weekend!

a little bit of prettiness….

Hello everyone! I’ve been busy lately with some new designs, a Christmas Market submission, getting orders packed and sent (Thank you for all the support in my shop!!) and some personalised design work. I am also at The Treasury Market here in Stellenbosch again this Saturday. It’s been, and still is, a busy time!! Hopefully (don’t we always say this) it will calm down a bit next week and I’ll touch ground…..

Something that I always find time for (usually in the morning in bed using the ipad) is my daily fix of Pinterest. I follow such amazing creative and artistic people, and am constantly inspired by the lovely images. (I also sometimes have such a good laugh at the funny stuff I see….). Today I am going to share a few of these “pretty things” with you, to hopefully inspire you, delight you and maybe you’ll want to get painting or stitching……

letterpress love from studio carta

Hello!! Don’t you just love surprises? I got one last week and was so chuffed.

I got an e-mail from Angela Liguori that immediately got my attention – you know in that way of “someone I really admire is e-mailing ME!!”. To explain – Angela has a business called Studio Carta in Boston. She has THE MOST gorgeous range of products – letterpress stationery, italian cotton ribbon (in every colour you can imagine), wrapping paper, vintage stamps and envelopes and tools. I dream of visiting her shop one day!! Well – it turns out I won a prize on her blog. A lovely set of the most beautiful letterpress cards which arrived in my postbox yesterday. I absolutely love them. One is going into a frame, and the rest will be used very sparingly for very special people!! Aren’t these divine…….

I can’t leave it there – you’ve all got to see her lovely store and ribbons…….

One day I will pop-in Angela and THANK YOU so much for my parcel.
