A Late Summer Picnic at Boschendal Estate

Hello friends!! I hope you all had a lovely weekend. We were extremely lazy, loafing around at home, and on Sunday we popped over the hill to Boschendal for a picnic lunch. It was such a lovely day and I got some great pictures, so here I am sharing them with you all.

We felt like tourists in our own backyard – something we don’t do often enough!! We are truly fortunate to live in such a beautiful corner of the world…..

Here’s wishing you all a fabulous week!!

The Lotus Flower – oh my!!!

Hello everyone!! I thought I would have been back to chat sooner, but yet again life took me elsewhere….

So – my discovery in Mauritius was the beautiful Lotus flower!! We visited the Pamplemousse Botanical Gardens, and I was really looking forward to seeing the giant waterlily pads. They were really amazing, but disappointingly there was only 1 lonely bloom in the huge pond. So – on we walked and around the corner we discovered the Lotus Pond – and for the first time in my life I saw the Lotus flower – a huge pond full of them. Wow!!

I never expected them to stand so tall out of the water, both leaves and blooms. The leaves are huge, in the most beautiful hues of green. And the blooms – I was speechless. So serene and majestic, in a buttery cream, tinged with green and sometimes almost translucent. I was somewhat saddened that they had no distinctive scent, but that didn’t detract from my excitement. As the petals fall off, really interesting pods appear, which gradually turn from yellow to a green and purple, until finally a dark, dry brown. The organic shape of the pod I now recognise from some beautiful textile designs that I have seen lately.

I will go so far as to say that this experience was one of the highlights of my time in Mauritius. I always gravitate to beautiful flowers, and love to photograph them – so this was right up my alley.

Before I go - I want to thank all my lovely new friends that I have met through BYW, who regularly drop by, read and comment on my blog. I really appreciate all the feedback, encouragement and friendship SO MUCH!! It’s wonderful to feel part of such a caring circle of like-minded people – I am so glad I signed up for BYW and met you all!!

Have a wonderful day.

A Quick Glimpse of Babylonstoren Gardens – oh my!!!

Hello Everyone and welcome to a new week!! Apologies that I have been so quiet – we lost our ADSL line for a few days so I have been unable to post anything. Very frustrating!!

I have SO much to share with you all this week! Firstly I must show you a glimpse of my day last Friday. I had the opportunity to “pop in” to see something at Babylonstoren. For those of you (like me before Friday) who don’t know about Babylonstoren it is a hidden gem!! It is an historic Cape farm that has been rejuvenated in the most stunning way. Guesthouse, restaurant, working fruit and wine farm – and the MOST amazing HUGE fruit and vegetable garden you have ever seen! I was completely blown away!!

Luckily I had my camera with me, but unluckily the battery was very low and died…. a blessing in disguise as I will HAVE to go back and spend many more hours wandering around.

I happened upon a few peach trees and the image so reminded me of Leslie Shewring’s latest post on acreativemint where she photographed apple orchards in Canada. As we are in the opposite season we have our first peaches on the trees. Here are my pictures that remind me of hers…..

I promise to tell you more about Babylonstoren very soon – once I have been back! Any of you who live nearby who are planning / busy with a vegetable garden – do yourselves a favour and go see (set aside at least a few hours…..)

So – there is our start to the week. Pop back soon as I have loads more to share with you this week!!

Have an awesome Monday!!
