Karoo Inspirations…

Hello friends!! I’m back from an absolutely amazing week of enjoying the vast beauty of South Africa with my very special hubby!! We had a good break, and enjoyed fresh air and peace…..

For those of you who know South Africa, we spent 2 nights in Swellendam, relaxed and visited a few shops… and an old friend. Then we were off further up the coast and then inland at George, through the mountains and on to the Great Karoo. My mom was born in Graaf Reinet and my Grandpa always loved the plains of the Camdeboo, so it was rather special for me to spend a few days on an amazing Game Reserve in the area. The air is so clean, so quiet – and so COLD!! We enjoyed 4 game drives with a wonderful guide – saw eland, gemsbok, kudu, springbok, waterbuck, buffalo, mountain and burchell’s zebra, giraffe, rhino (wow!!) and had the MOST amazing experience tracking cheetah on foot. Once we left there we stopped in at the Valley of Desolation and then made our way back through the karoo to De Rust, where we cut through Meiringspoort and travelled on to Prince Albert. We stayed in a beautiful, old B&B, and went on a day drive with a very interesting and knowledgeble guide up the Swartberg Pass and then down into the Gamkaskloof, better known as “The Hell” (anything but!!!!!). What an extreme road – glad he was driving!!!! On our last morning we stopped in at a few little shops where I bought lovely karoo wool to knit a few hats and scarves, and also some wonderful other goodies which I’ll show you later in the week….. And then it was back home (to sleep in our own bed which is always the best welcome home!!). And today life is back to normal…….

So – I’m “karoo-inspired” and have made personalised notecards to send to a few people to thank them for our lovely holiday.

all images my own.

Be sure to pop back tomorrow to see the catalogue!!!

Loving Paper Runway Issue #4!!

Oh what joy to switch my computer on this Monday morning to find the new issue of Paper Runway!! (Mondays are the best days to get a little gift like this – makes a dreary day better…).

And, as usual, such a lovely issue for us paper-lovers out there!! I still need to sit down quietly – just me, a cup of tea, and this issue on my laptop – and loose myself in all the images and interesting articles. The quick fly-through that I have just taken immediately highlighted 2 articles that grabbed my attention, both visually and with the subject matter.

images: Paper Runway

Firstly, Paula Mills (of the lovely Sweet William, that I have mentioned before) shares with us her love of collecting paper ever since her school-days (I have similar memories of swopping lovely writing paper on the playground at primary school), and what paper and Sweet William mean to her and her sister now. What a lovely, inspiring story!!

Emma Kate Codrington (of Emma Kate Creative and lapetitebowerbird) takes us with her on a “gelato inspired” shopping meander through the paper shops of Rome, Florence and Venice…… something to dream of!! It reminded me so of the few days I spent in Florence in 2004 (when I was still deeply entrenched in my job as a surgical sales rep and had not yet fully realised that I was meant to be doing something far more creative!!). I wandered into all the lovely stationery shops I saw and to this day still use my beautiful Florentine notebooks and boxes I bought. I am in awe of the quality and craftsmanship that has been passed down through the generations of these artisans. I have not yet been to Rome, but it’s on my list, and I now have a few shops to visit there…. Thank you Emma!!

Do yourselves a favour and read this latest issue of Paper Runway!! Let me know which article you loved the most…..

Have an inspired week!!

The Colours and Textures of Longbeach Resort

Hello again!! I was planning to share these pictures with you last week – so I promise this is the last I will show of our holiday in Mauritius. Can’t believe we’ve been home over a week now!!

We stayed at a new resort called Longbeach, on the east coast. The architecture and design of Longbeach is most impressive – very clean, contemporary lines and the most wonderful use of textures. The contrasts of the volcanic rock, concrete, wood, water, foliage and interesting use of textiles provided for a lot of visual interest, while achieving a really calm atmosphere. You can see that a lot of thought went into the design…..

I took so many pictures, so I decided to make a collage of the various textures and colours in an attempt to illustrate what I have described.

It was an absolute pleasure to stay somewhere that appealed to the designer in me!!

Mauritius – our holiday!!

Hello Everyone – I’ve missed you all, but have had a wonderful week of doing nothing!!! We both needed the rest so badly, and I feel renewed to deal with the world and life again.

I have so much to share with you, and some great photos too – so I’ll be posting about our holiday over the next few days. To start off with – some pictures of the beach and view, our hotel, and the day we spent on a catamaran on the ocean (snorkelling, swimming and a barbeque lunch on the boat).

I have come home with a touch of colour (I tend to burn so the sunblock is slathered on) and am in a summer frame of mind. What a wonderful feeling!!!!!

I’ll be back with more pictures of our hotel and an amazing, beautiful discovery…….
